(ad piece for this past mid term election)
The Midterm election in November of this year in Ohio and across the United states have been
summed up in 4 words “Low African American Turnout.” Because the bulk of our readers are
from Ohio I will focus on the state ‐ wide elections and the importance of Ohio in the
Presidential Election. In the state of Ohio Democrats lost five Congressional seats, all of the
statewide seats From Governor to state treasurer. It is a well‐known fact that political
campaigns are won in the communities not on CNN or FOX news in the communities where the
voters are and where all change will be felt. The Question that is most evident is; Why was the
turnout so low in the African American community? In my assessment it was lack of visibility of
the candidates/incumbents. In Cuyahoga county the largest populated democratic (and diverse)
County in Ohio, Democratic candidates were rarely seen; yes we saw yard signs, Billboards and
media ads but we didn’t see them, we who live in these communities need a visuals we need
presence we need to know that these candidates are here for us and the betterment of the
state. My hope for the next election is that the democrats regroup and go back to old school
tactics such as going door to door, holding community meetings, going to where the people are
grocery stores, malls, sports events (not just professional). These small tips (That involve the
people) go a long way in running a successful campaign.
